QUILTING BASICS

Five different types of bindings will be discussed, and you are going to make samples of three types, from the simple charity bindings through award winning bindings. You will be learning how to do bindings that are all machine stitched and from there I will show you how to make more difficult bindings and ones finished by hand. They really are easy, and I have several tips that I will be teaching you that make them easier - and yet very professional when finished.

Color Basics

Choosing fabric for a project is hard sometimes. From picking a focus fabric, accent fabrics and background fabric. This class will guide you through some things to think about and give you tools to use to identify & explain the importance of color values, intensity, and scale of prints. It can be fun! Beginning Foundation Paper Piecing               Jennifer Johnson

Foundation paper-piecing is a quilt block construction technique that will bring joy to your heart with its beautifully sharp points and precise seams. Many people are intimidated by the seeming complexity of paper-piecing, but I will guide you through the step-by-step process of producing three to four paper-pieced designs. We will also discuss different ways to implement paper- pieced blocks into your projects.  Come give this fun technique a try! I think you will be delighted with the results. Good for confident beginners and up.

Block of the Month

Townsquare is a skill building Block of the Month program only available at A Quilter’s Oasis. It will run January to November and includes an intro/prep class on January 2, unique blocks that encompass a variety of techniques, and a reveal party in November. Participants have access to 2 size options for the quilt. The wall-hanging/throw size is 40” x 56”, and the larger quilt size is 60” x 84”.
Each month will feature a 30-minute block demo and be available through Zoom for those that are unable to make it in person. Some of the skills that will be covered in this BOM program are nesting seams, flip and sew techniques, and working with exposed bias edges.

Crazy Quilting

In this basic Crazy Quilting class, you will be given the choice to construct a heart or a square. Traditional piecing technique will be taught. Hand embroidery stitches introduced are the stem stitch, lazy daisy, chain, and feather stitch. Silk ribbon stitches, lace painting, button clusters as well as silk ribbon bobbin work will enhance your individual crazy quilted block.

The Mav Pack is great for traveling, shopping, or just everyday use. Everything necessary is close at hand.This is an intermediate pattern in that it uses advanced bag making techniques that require the sewer to have general familiarity with bag making. It requires accurate cutting/sewing and installing a zipper. The bag is “turned” through the opening left in the pocket which gives the bag a nice snug, finished lining. The is no binding involved.

In this class you will make Flying Geese, Half-square triangles and pop some corners! Your Wing Clipper and Tucker Trimmer are essential. The Corner Pop makes those folded corners easy. We will spend one session on the Flying Geese, another on the triangles and popped corners, and the final session on block assembly. The block looks harder than it is, but there are a lot of parts that must be made accurately for the block to fit together correctly. Karen has all the tips necessary for you to be successful.

All classes are based on new and unpublished designs created by him.  He will supply 40, 2 1/2" strips, quilt quality fabrics from his stash for your project.  Because it's an Improv class, you will not know what we are making until the day of class.  Ray has successfully taught this great fun class for several years, and everyone is amazed at the great projects that can be created from stash strips.  A fun and adventurous attitude is required. You will be expected to purchase additional fabric, up to 4 yards of coordinating fabric for this project. Because you are choosing your strips from the stash it is difficult to purchase the coordinating fabric in advance.  The Oasis has a great assortment of coordinating fabrics for this project.

The River Pond quilt is a beautiful quilt that evokes a mountain landscape reflected in the waters below. The modern(ish) design of the quilt consists of cleverly pieced blocks turned on point and sewn into diagonal strips. It is not as hard as it looks, but it does require precise cutting, a precise quarter inch seam, and good organization. You will relay enjoy the process of building this quilt as well as the final product. The two sessions should enable you to get all your blocks made and have a good start on assembling the top.

This is a lovely variation of a Storm at Sea quilt, featuring hearts; Queen size 88 ½” x 103 ½” has 2 hearts in the quilt center, Lap size 51 ½” x 66 ½” has one heart in the center. To make cutting and piecing this quilt easier and faster the Diamond Rects ruler is recommended. The pattern explains how to make the quilt with or without this ruler. There are no curved seams in this quilt.
