CHARITY SEW DAY

Camp Reach for the Sky Sew Day
Monday, May 16, 2022
10am - 3pm
Seany's Camp Reach for the Sky (CR4TS) is a free summer camp for kids with cancer and their siblings. The Seany Foundations has taken the reins for CR4TS from the American Cancer Society, and will continue to run this magical place where kids dealing with the stress of cancer can go to hang out and connect with other kids who truly understand what they are going through.
The camp is divided into serval camps, a day camp for cancer victims aged 4-8, a weeklong resident camp in the mountains in Julian, CA for the 8 to 17 year old campers, a separate camp for siblings of cancer victims, and a family camp and a bereavement camp as well. No child pays to attend camp and all the staff are volunteers.
As part of the festivities during camp week, each camper is gifted a quilt. This started some 25 years ago by Rosie Gonzalez, owner of Rosie's Calico Cupboard in La Mesa, CA. Each year a group of quilters makes approximately 350 quilts. Members of this "informal" group; some make the tops, some do the machine quilting and then everyone binds. Some of the members have moved to other parts of the southwest but still contribute to this charity. No contribution is turned down!
Terry Nesbitt is one of those members that has moved from Southern California here to the East Valley.  Nancy Reeves introduce me to Terry and she shared her involvement in making quilts for the kids. I immediately wanted to get the shop involved and we discussed a sew day where quilters would come and make three yard quilt tops. The quilts made would then be donated. Terry will make sure they get to Rosie and the group for quilting and binding.
Volunteers for the sew day will need to purchase the materials needed to construct the quilt top and binding. You can use fabrics from your "stash" or purchase a three yard bundle from the shop. Grab any of your 3 yard quilt books and choose a quilt to make.
I hope that you will join us for a fun day of sewing for these campers!! If you cannot join us for the sew day, make a quilt at home to donate.
